Among the projects launched by Sri Lanka China Buddhist Friendship Association (SLCBFA) with the assistance of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sri Lanka and the Buddhists in China, “Suwa Diviyata Pan Dothak” which means “Fresh water for healthy life”, plays a major role supplying drinkable fresh water to remote villages in dry zone affected by kidney and other related diseases due to contaminated, unhealthy drinking water. According to the reports, there is a reduction of new kidney patients in the villages where the said project has already been launched.

The first, second and third phases of the said project have been launched successfully in following villages: Gomarankadawala in Trincomalee district, Rambava in Anuradhapura district and Walsapugala in Hambanthota district. The project has benefited thousands of villagers who had been the victims of various health issues due to scarcity of drinkable water and SLCBFA has been motivated to continue the project by the appreciative feedback of the said villagers and the chief monks of the Buddhist Temples in the said villages.

With the said feedbacks and following a request made by the Hon. Minister of Buddha Sasana Mr. Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Nipunagama, a remote village in Kurunagala district, was selected to launch the fourth phase of the project and its construction is rapidly going on these days. All the projects launched by SLCBFA are continuous and patronized by the chief monks of the temples in the areas where the projects are launched and the fourth phase of the project is patronized by Rev. Alpitiye Rahula Nayaka Thero, the chief monk of Nilgala Aranya Senasanaya (hermitage).

Mr. Sumathi Dharmawardena, the president, Mr. Aruna De Silva, General Secretary, and Major K.G. Chandrasiri, the Deputy Treasurer of SLCBFA observed the construction of the pump house and the installation of the water purification plant on the 5th of June 2019. Further, they met Rev. Alpitiye Rahula Nayaka Thero and the villagers to exchange the ideas to make the project a success. The villagers think this project will help not only to the villagers in Nipunagama, where the population is about 400, but also the villagers in surrounding villages where drinkable water is a burning issue. SLCBFA has made all the arrangements to finish the project within a month and hand over to the public.

SLCBFA is planning to install the fifth water purification plant in Uppuweli in Tricomalee district under the patronage of Rev. Ahungalle Seela Vishuddhi Nayaka Thero.

The sole aim of the project “Suwa Diviyata Pan Dothak” is to contribute maximum to the national attempt made to provide drinkable fresh water to the whole nation to eradicate the kidney and all the other related diseases linked with contaminated and unhealthy drinking water.
